Essential Qualification

Candidates must fulfil either Eligibility A or Eligibility B.

Eligibility A

Candidates must have:

  • A Master’s Degree with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in a relevant/allied subject from an Indian University or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university; and
  • Must have cleared the UGC NET/CSIR NET or a similar UGC-accredited examination such as SLET/SET.

Candidates who have been awarded a Ph.D. in accordance with the applicable UGC Regulations may also be exempted from the NET/SLET/SET requirement.

Candidates registered for Ph.D. programmes before 11 July 2009 may also be exempted from the NET/SLET/SET requirement, subject to fulfilment of the prescribed conditions relating to the mode of Ph.D., thesis evaluation, viva voce, research publications and conference presentations.

Eligibility B

Candidates who have obtained a Ph.D. degree from a foreign university/institution ranked among the top 500 in the World University Rankings at any time by any of the following ranking agencies are eligible:

  1. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS);
  2. Times Higher Education (THE); or
  3. Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Desirable Qualification

Candidates having a Ph.D. in the relevant branch/specialization will be preferred.
