President Grants Approval to Three Criminal Law Amendment Bills and Telecommunications Act
India’s criminal justice system is set for a major overhaul as the President of India has given assent to three crucial bills—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. These bills will replace the existing Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and Indian Evidence Act.
The development, which aims to focus on delivering justice rather than merely imposing punishment, was officially announced on the Rashtrapati Bhavan website.
Additionally, the President also signed the Telecommunications Act, 2023, a successor to the Telegraph Act of 1885, marking a significant update in the governance of telecom services in India. The enactment of different sections of the Telecommunications Act will now require the formulation of rules following the presidential assent.
The bills, initially introduced in Lok Sabha as Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Bill on August 11, underwent examination by a parliamentary committee before being successfully passed by the Lok Sabha on December 20 and subsequently by the Rajya Sabha on December 21. The official publication in the Gazette of India is yet to follow.
